Increase of live weight of lambs (+11%) at simultaneous improvement of feed conversion (15.3%)

Evaluation of effects of feed additive Sanbio SANA on weight gain and carcass characteristics of Lambs, Germany

Gutenborn, Germany (November 18, 2022) – This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementation of multifunctional feed additive Sanbio SANA on the ration of lambs on the weight and qualitative characteristics of the carcasses.

1. Material and Methods

In the experiment, 20 male lambs (Awassi breed) were used, their ages ranged between 3-4 months, with an average live weight of 14-15 kg. The lambs were placed in individual pens, the lambs were distributed randomly into two groups as per Table 1.

Table 1 – Scheme of scientific and economic experience

Group Feeding features
Control Concentrated diets without supplementation of Sanbio SANA
SANA Concentrated diets with supplementation of Sanbio SANA at a rate of 2 kg/t

Sanbio SANA is a feed additive designed to absorb mycotoxins and endotoxins from feed for farm animals (ruminants, cattle, sheep, swine, poultry, fish) and to stimulate the digestive tract to improve the metabolism. The manufacturer is the SANBOS GmbH (Germany). As the main components, Sanbio SANA contains micronized Montmorillonite-Illite clay compound which is activated in electric-magnetic polarization process (SANBIO process). Sanbio SANA is a grey powder, made from natural source, practically insoluble in water.

Table 2 – Feed formula

Index Value Unit
Barley 35 %
Wheat 10 %
Wheat bran 25 %
Maize 18 %
Soybean meal 10 %
Lime 1 %
Salt 1 %

All twenty lambs were slaughtered, after stopping the feed for (12) hours while leaving water available for them.

The live weight was recorded before slaughter, then the weights of the slaughtered residues were taken, and the measurements of the carcass characteristics were studied.

The process of cutting the carcass was carried out by separating it into two equal halves, right and left from the center of the spine.

The left half of the carcass was cut homogeneously into eight cuts, four of which are main cuts (leg, loin, ribs, and shoulder) and four others are secondary cuts (neck, fore shank, breast, and flank). Then, the physical separation of these pieces is performed into their components (lean, fat, bone).

  1. Results and Discussion

Table 3 included the effect of supplementation of natural feed additive Sanbio SANA on the final weight, the total and daily weight gain, the efficiency of the food conversion, and the empty body weight. It was noticed that there are significant differences in the total weight gain between the control and experimental group.

Initial weight kg 14.35 15.01
Final weight kg 26.98 9.02
Total weight gain kg 12.63 14.01
Daily weight gain g 140.33 155.66
Feed conversion rate kg/kg 6.57 5.56
Empty body weight Kg 22.25 23.01

Figure 1 – Effect on weight performance (kg)

The carcasses of the experimental group show significant differences in quantity and quality compared to the carcasses of the control group.

The reason may be attributed to improving the pH of the rumen due to the effect of adding natural micronized activated Montmorillonit-Illite compound, maintaining the amount of water inside the gut, and reducing ammonia toxicity. As well as, eliminating or reducing the effect of mycotoxins and improving the rumen environment that helped stimulate and grow microorganisms and thus raised the digestibility factor and led to an increase in feed utilization.

Moreover, the particles of the Sanbio SANA feed supplement show a highly large effective surface and physical reactivity which result in increased chemical catalysis.

4. Conclusion
Consequently, to intensify growth and to improve the quality of carcasse characteristics it is recommended to jointly introduce the multifunctional additive / adsorbent Sanbio SANA in the dosage of 1-2 kg/t of feed in the composition of the diets of lambs and sheep.

The positive effects at a glance:

  • Increase of live weight of lambs (+10.92%)
  • Improve of metabolism, digestion and assimilation of protein, fiber and nitrogen-free extractives
  • Improvement of feed conversion (15.3%)
  • Improvement of health status
  • Improvement of quality and quantity of carcasses (more meat, less fat)
  • Safety and tolerance when used dietary additions.
